On the subzero day of March 5, Teamsters Local 320 bus driver Lyle Silbernagle found something extremely upsetting while on his route for Minneapolis Public Schools. What Lyle found was a toddler in nothing but a diaper outside a residence shivering uncontrollably.
The child was nearly unconscious and pale as Lyle carried the little boy to his bus and wrapped the child in his coat. The heat in the bus was turned up to the max to revive the child as best Lyle could.
“The little boy’s hands were frozen,” says Lyle. “I rubbed them with my hands and blew on them as fast as I could.”
Lyle radioed the District Safety Officer for immediate assistance. The child began to get color back in his cheeks and slowly stopped shivering. Soon help arrived; the child was then stabilized and taken into protective custody. The little boy is now safe and sound.
Let’s thank our Teamster hero Lyle Silbernagle for his quick actions and big heart!
