North Branch Area Public Schools Board Members Vote to Harm Students and Parents
On Thursday, March 8th School Board Members Voted to Outsource Bus Services, Lay-off Teachers and Staff
North Branch, MN -
North Branch Area Public School Board Members voted Thursday evening to decimate their bus services, lay-off teachers and staff. Over 50 bus driver positions are set to be outsourced and teachers and staff positions have been slashed due to declining enrollment.
Teachers, students, and staff pleaded with school board members for over two hours to keep their bus services, foreign language instructors, and support staff for special needs students.
“In a disgraceful show of arrogance, four of the six school board members voted to harm students and parents by outsourcing bus services and laying-off teachers and staff,” says Brian Aldes, Teamsters Local 320 Secretary Treasurer. “Superintendant Dr. Deb Henton was dishonest in her testimony to both the community and the school board as she mistestified over and over again that she couldn’t fill bus driver positions or that she sought real input from the staff.”
In 2017, North Branch Area Public Schools sought and attained a $70 million referendum to refurbish school facilities to attract new students and reverse enrollment decline. Teachers and staff were critical in the community outreach and support needed to secure such a large referendum.
“What North Branch Area Public Schools did with its slash and burn agenda has made enrollment less attractive to students who desire foreign languages, parents with special needs students, and they put bus safety in jeopardy,” says Aldes.
The vote that took place on March 8th can be reversed and Teamsters Local 320 will make every attempt to protect the careers of its dedicated members who drive school bus every single day!
