Bloomington, MN - On Saturday, October 13 Teamsters Local 320 held its annual Steward Training and Seminar at the DoubleTree Hilton Bloomington. Local 320 Stewards were able to participate in the following training courses throughout the day:
- Roles and Responsibilities of the Teamster Steward – The Basics for New Stewards;
- Investigatory Meetings: Your Rights with Weingarten, Garrity, Tennison, and Loudermill;
- Teamsters 320 Membership – The Discussion One on One;
- National and Minnesota Teamsters Political Involvement – Why it’s Critical Today;
- Basic Grievance Handling – The 5 Ws.
At the general session all attendees received presentations from Raven Hall, IBT Legal Dept. and Karen Jones, IBT Communications and Outreach Coordinator. Raven Hall presented, Fighting Harassment – Stepping Up As Teamsters and Karen Jones presented, Teamsters History.
Hall provided legal interpretations, scenarios, and real-world examples of workplace harassment and how it’s the responsibility of all Teamster leaders to take workplace harassment allegations seriously and to follow up through the proper channels.
Jones presented a historical analysis of the Teamsters contribution to the Civil Rights Movement in addition to the complete history of the IBT Public Services Division. The history of Teamsters Local 320 was also provided by Jones.
This year, Local 320 had two very special guests attend the seminar with one guest making an impromptu visit. DFL Lieutenant Governor Candidate, State Representative Peggy Flanagan made an unscheduled visit to Bloomington to meet with Teamster Stewards. Rep. Flanagan is the running mate of Congressman Tim Walz who is vying to succeed Governor Mark Dayton.
Rep. Flanagan said, “Your work is invaluable. Tim and I are committed to protecting your foundational collective bargaining rights!”
United States Senator Tina Smith was the keynote speaker at the seminar and she greeted Teamster Stewards with a warm Minnesota welcome.
“Organize, organize, and organize. That’s how we win elections, it’s how we win on issues, it’s how we win for working people,” said Senator Smith. “Thanks for standing up and fighting back for so many Minnesotans and people across the country. It’s an honor to be with you today!”
